Silver Bullets
Diversity Seminar
Need
- Plan and deliver a Diversity Seminar and Diversity Track at the Annual Maryland Teen Focus.
- Awareness of how diversity effects our day-to-day living and how we, as a small core group, can make a difference.
Methods
- Committee of teens with Extension Educator planned seminar and track where participants would have an active hands-on experience.
- Contracts were made to the University of Maryland, College Park, Office of Human Services and Dean of Library to secure speaker, diversity display and video entitled "Writer's Block: Diversity on Campus".
- Arrangements were made to hold seminar and track within the Nyumburu Cultural Center Multipurpose Room.
Objective
- Give all participants the opportunity to share.
- Expose teens and volunteers to the meaning of Diversity.
- Include all aspects of culture through an educational display.
- Build participants awareness and relate to the diversity of disability.
Impact
- Teens and volunteers became more knowledgeable of what diversity is by recognizing how people are treated differently as a result of their diversity.
- Teens and volunteers became closer and expressed themselves more freely.
- By listening and viewing situations, the group was able to relate better with each other the remainder of the week. Comments were made on evaluation that this year everyone attended sessions and got along much better.
- Diversity awareness exposure. Participants saw the importance of including diversity in all future programs at every level (state, regional, county, club and community).
Target Audience
- Teens and volunteers in the State of Maryland.
Cost
- Personnel and material resources were provided at no cost by the University of Maryland, College Park.
