"You Kids Are All Alike!"
Need
- Plan and deliver a program entitled "You Kids Are All Alike!"
- Awareness of youth's willingness to accept their own stereotypical actions.
- Educate towards understanding and reality.
- Educate how stereotypical behavior could affect youth attitudes and success.
Methods
- Youth were invited to a leadership retreat. The retreat participants were African-American, Asian, Whites, males and females. Adults attended as volunteers and also participated.
- Youth were invited to sit wherever they felt comfortable and would be able to interact with the group.
- Activities included: pretest done by thought provoking questions (no visual or audible responses were required), discussion groups, individual responses, group consensus, group role play, and group conclusions.
- The workshop was presented in 3 1/2 hours.
Objective
- For youth to recognize and understand their stereotypical behavior and put into practice methods of elimination and understanding.
Impact
- 27 youth and 8 adults participated in the workshop.
- Youth learned the definition of and limiting and negative aspects of stereotypical behavior.
- Positive feedback from the groups indicated a willingness to understand and distinguish actions of different cultures.
- Youth exhibited awareness that stereotyping could be limiting and damaging to a particular culture and will impede a harmonious society.
Target Audience
- Teens, ages 12-17, and adults.
Cost
- Cost to youth attending the Leadership Retreat was $5.00. Curriculum was obtained from workshop attendance and through a loan. Handouts presented in the workshop were supplied by the Extension Office. County Extension 4-H staff member conducted the training.
